Goethe-Zertifikat B1 · Sprechen Teil 3

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 (Part 3): feedback, questions and a sample dialogue

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 (Part 3), officially “Über ein Thema sprechen”, takes approx. 1–2 minutes per exam participant and follows straight after each presentation in the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 speaking module: the candidate who listened gives feedback and asks one question, and the presenter answers (Durchführungsbestimmungen, as of 1 September 2025, § 3; Modellsatz Erwachsene, 2nd ed. 2015, pp. 28 and 45). This page covers how Teil 3 works and is marked, a sample dialogue in German, five question types and common mistakes. All examples are our own practice material, not questions from real exams.

Simulate the whole speaking exam: AI examiners and an AI partner, all three parts, then feedback on your own sentences – from €5.98 per simulation (5-pack), no subscription.

B1 Sprechen is an independent practice tool. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by the Goethe-Institut or telc gGmbH. The sample dialogue, questions and phrases on this page are our own practice material, not questions from real exams; the exam facts come from the official documents linked at the end of this page.

Teil 3 in three steps: feedback, one question, your answers

The task sheet in the Modellsatz (p. 28) asks for three things: after your partner's presentation, give feedback and ask a question about it; after your own, react to the feedback and answer the questions. The assessment criteria name the same three: Rückmeldung, Frage stellen, beantworten (p. 46). Sentence counts are our suggestion, not an official rule. The sample sentences fit our example topic below and use du; if you and your partner say Sie to each other, switch the forms.

  1. suggested: 2–3 sentences

    Step 1 · Rückmeldung geben

Giving feedback – after your partner's presentation

The candidate sheet gives examples: how you liked the presentation and what was new or especially interesting for you. Our advice: thank your partner and name one thing they actually said.

    • „Danke, Anna. Neu war für mich, dass die Regeln nicht in allen Städten gleich sind.“ – Thanks, Anna. New to me: the rules differ from town to town.
    • „Deinen Vorschlag, dass die Regeln überall gleich sein sollten, finde ich gut.“ – I like your idea of the same rules everywhere.
    • „Bei mir war es am Anfang genauso: Ich habe alles in eine Tonne geworfen.“ – Same for me at first: I threw everything into one bin.
  2. task sheet: one question

Step 2 · Eine Frage stellen

Asking one question about the presentation

Ask about something your partner said, ideally with a question word (wie, was, warum, welche). Our advice: a yes/no question is allowed but often gets a one-word answer.

    • „Du hast den Joghurtbecher erwähnt. Wie hast du deinen Fehler gemerkt?“ – You mentioned the yoghurt pot. How did you notice your mistake?
    • „Ich habe nur eine Frage: Was machst du heute anders als am Anfang?“ – Just one question: what do you do differently now from when you started?
  3. suggested: 2–4 sentences per answer

Step 3 · Auf Rückmeldung und Fragen reagieren

Answering – after your own presentation

Thank your partner briefly, then answer their question and the second examiner's: the answer first, then a reason or an example. If you did not understand, ask what they mean instead of guessing.

    • „Danke für die Rückmeldung! Ein Nachbar hat es mir freundlich erklärt. Seitdem schaue ich zweimal hin.“ – Thanks for the feedback! A neighbour kindly explained it to me. Now I always look twice.
    • „Meinst du die Regeln hier in Deutschland oder in meiner Heimatstadt?“ – Do you mean the rules here in Germany or in my home town?

How Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 works: feedback and one question after each presentation

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 (“Über ein Thema sprechen”) follows straight after each presentation in Teil 2 – not after both: the candidate who listened gives feedback, for example on what was new or especially interesting, and asks one question about the presentation; the presenter reacts and answers. Then the second examiner asks a question too (Modellsatz Erwachsene, 2nd ed. 2015, pp. 28 and 45). According to the Durchführungsbestimmungen (as of 1 September 2025, § 3.3), the second examiner also gives feedback.

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 takes approx. 1–2 minutes per exam participant (Durchführungsbestimmungen § 3); the candidates' cover sheet in the Modellsatz gives approx. 2 minutes, without saying whether that is per person (p. 25). In an individual exam, only the examiner asks questions about the presentation (Durchführungsbestimmungen § 3.3).

The official online Modellsatz calls this part “Aufgabe 3”. In the moderation example (Modellsatz, p. 45), the examiner who leads the exam asks the listeners before the first presentation: „Hören Sie gut zu und überlegen Sie sich eine Frage …“ (listen and think of a question). After the feedback and question, the examiner hands over: „Mein/-e Kollege/Kollegin hat auch noch eine Frage an Sie.“ (my colleague has a question too). Then the roles swap.

03

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 marks: 16 of 100, task fulfilment only

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 is worth up to 16 of the 100 marks in the speaking module, all for task fulfilment (Erfüllung): giving feedback, asking a question and answering, judged on content and length (marking sheet, Übungssatz Erwachsene, © 2016, p. 48; assessment criteria, Modellsatz, p. 46). The bands A to E give 16, 12, 8, 4 or 0 marks. Teil 3 has no separate marks for interaction, coherence, vocabulary or structures; pronunciation is marked once for Teil 1–3 together.

This one rating covers both your roles, listener and presenter. The two examiners mark independently, the module result is their average, and the pass mark is 60 of 100 (Durchführungsbestimmungen §§ 5 and 6.3). B1 Sprechen (b1sprechen.com), an independent practice tool with its own practice tasks, gives no marks, no pass prediction and no pronunciation rating; prices and availability: b1sprechen.com/en/pricing.

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 example: a sample dialogue in German

Our own example on „Mülltrennung – lohnt sich der Aufwand?“ (sorting your rubbish – is it worth the effort?), about settling into life in Germany; not an exam topic or an official model answer. Anna presents, Ben listens; they say du to each other, the examiners say Sie. First the end of Anna's presentation, then one round of Teil 3.

Anna: „…

Und stellen Sie bitte auch eine Frage.“ (based on the Modellsatz, p. 45)
  • Ben: „Danke, Anna. Die Geschichte mit dem Joghurtbecher fand ich lustig – das ist mir am Anfang auch passiert.“ (feedback: one detail plus his own experience)
  • Ben: „Und wie hast du die Regeln dann gelernt?“ (an open question about that detail: how did you learn the rules?)
  • Anna: „Danke! Mit einer App von meiner Stadt. Man tippt zum Beispiel ‚Pizzakarton‘ ein, und die App zeigt die richtige Tonne. Nach zwei Monaten habe ich sie kaum noch gebraucht.“ (thanks, a direct answer, an example)
  • Examiner: „Mein Kollege hat auch noch eine Frage an Sie.“ (Modellsatz wording: my colleague has a question for you too)
  • Second examiner: „Trennt man in Ihrem Heimatland auch den Müll?“ (a yes/no question: do people sort rubbish in your home country too?)
  • Anna: „Nicht überall. In meiner Heimatstadt gibt es seit ein paar Jahren zwei Tonnen, aber viele benutzen nur eine. Ich glaube, das ändert sich, wenn die Kinder es in der Schule lernen.“ (more than yes or no: an example, then her opinion)
  • Examiner: „Vielen Dank. Kommen wir nun zu Ihrer Präsentation, Ben.“ (now Ben presents, and Teil 3 follows with the roles swapped)

Sample by B1 Sprechen, not an official exam task. The examiner's lines follow the moderation example in the Modellsatz (2nd ed. 2015, p. 45), where the second examiner only asks; under the Durchführungsbestimmungen (§ 3.3) the second examiner also gives feedback.

05

Giving feedback (Rückmeldung geben): name one detail

In Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3, the candidate sheet suggests what feedback can cover: how you liked the presentation and what was new or especially interesting for you (Modellsatz, p. 28). Our pattern: thanks, one detail, briefly why – your own experience or your home country – then your question.

  • Instead of „Das war sehr interessant.“: „Interessant fand ich, dass sich die Mülltrennung für dich trotzdem lohnt.“ (that sorting is still worth it for you)
  • Instead of „Gute Präsentation.“: „Dass man Papier und Glas getrennt sammelt, kannte ich aus meinem Heimatland nicht.“ (separate paper and glass bins were new to me)
  • Instead of commenting on your partner's German, react to the content – the task is feedback on the presentation (our advice).
  • Instead of summing up the whole talk, pick one point and go on to your question.

More phrases for feedback, questions and answers: our Redemittel page, under “More practice material” below.

06

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 questions: five question types with German examples

In Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3, the task sheet asks for one question about your partner's presentation (Modellsatz, p. 28); in the moderation example the second examiner asks one too (p. 45). Our assessment: the Modellsatz slides ask for experience, home country, pros and cons and opinion, so questions usually relate to these points – including the ones put to you.

Prefer question words: „Trennst du den Müll gern?“ may get just „Nein.“; „Was nervt dich beim Mülltrennen am meisten?“ (what annoys you most about it?) gets a story. In each group, the first question fits any topic, the second Anna's talk.

  • Asking about a detail:„Kannst du ein Beispiel für … geben?“ – Can you give an example of …?„Was meinst du mit ‚kompliziert‘ – welche Regel genau?“ – What do you mean by “complicated”? Which rule?
  • Asking about experience:„Wie war das für dich, als du …?“ – What was it like for you when you …?„Wer hat dir am Anfang die Regeln erklärt?“ – Who explained the rules to you at first?
  • Comparing:„Was ist in deinem Heimatland anders als hier?“ – What is different in your home country?„Wo ist das Mülltrennen einfacher: hier oder in deiner Heimatstadt?“ – Where is sorting easier: here or in your home town?
  • Asking why:„Warum findest du, dass …?“ – Why do you think that …?„Warum sollten die Regeln in allen Städten gleich sein?“ – Why should every town have the same rules?
  • Asking about the future or for advice:„Was meinst du: Wie wird das in zehn Jahren aussehen?“ – What will it look like in ten years, do you think?„Welchen Tipp hast du für Leute, die gerade nach Deutschland gezogen sind?“ – What tip do you have for people new to Germany?

Answer first, then give a reason or an example – after a yes/no question too. These are types to practise with, not a forecast of your exam questions.

07

Preparing Teil 3: in the 15 minutes and while you listen

There is no separate task sheet for Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3: its instructions are printed at the bottom of the Teil 2 task sheet (Modellsatz, pp. 27–28), and you hear your partner's presentation only in the exam. In the 15 minutes of preparation you work alone, without dictionaries or phones (Modellsatz, p. 25); you may write brief notes on stamped rough paper (Konzeptpapier) to use in the exam, and all papers are collected afterwards (Durchführungsbestimmungen §§ 3.2 and 3.3). Our suggestion:

  • In the preparation time: about one minute for three questions you might be asked about your topic, with one keyword per answer.
  • While your partner presents: remember one detail and one question word – for Anna's talk, „Joghurtbecher“ and „wie?“.
  • When your partner has finished: thanks, the detail, your question.
  • When you answer: a short thanks, then answer directly.

The Durchführungsbestimmungen allow brief notes from the preparation time (§ 3.2) but do not say whether you may write while your partner presents – so keep the detail in your head.

08

Common mistakes in Teil 3 – and what to say instead

Mostly communication problems, not grammar. In the last three groups, the first phrase is for your partner (du), the second for an examiner.

  • Waiting until both have presented: Teil 3 follows each presentation straight away (Modellsatz, p. 45).
  • Only „Das war gut.“: it tells your partner nothing – name one detail.
  • Three questions in one go: the task sheet asks for one, and one clear question is easier to answer.
  • A question about something not in the presentation: ask about what your partner actually said – it also shows you listened.
  • One-word answers: after a short „Ja.“, add a reason or an example, as Anna does in the sample dialogue.
  • If you did not understand:„Entschuldigung, fragst du, ob …?“ – Sorry, are you asking whether …?„Könnten Sie die Frage bitte mit anderen Worten stellen?“ – Could you put the question another way, please?
  • If you need a moment:„Gute Frage – lass mich kurz überlegen.“ – Good question – let me think for a second.„Entschuldigen Sie, ich brauche einen Moment zum Nachdenken.“ – Excuse me, I need a moment to think.
  • If you have no answer ready:„Ehrlich gesagt weiß ich das nicht genau, aber ich erzähle dir, wie es bei mir war: …“ – To be honest, I don't know exactly, but I'll tell you how it was for me: …„Das kann ich Ihnen nicht genau sagen, aber ich vermute, …“ – I can't tell you exactly, but I suppose …

How to practise Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3: with a partner, alone or in a simulation

With a partner: one of you presents one of our practice topics for one or two minutes, the other gives feedback and asks one open question; then swap roles, with a timer.

Alone: record a presentation, write three questions someone might ask and answer each aloud in 20–30 seconds. For the listener's side, play a short German podcast clip and say one sentence of feedback and one question aloud.

Teil 3 of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1 speaking module needs a second person who presents, listens and asks; alone you can rehearse only parts of it. In the simulation by B1 Sprechen (b1sprechen.com), an independent practice tool with its own practice tasks, you speak the whole exam in German, Teil 1 to 3: after your presentation an AI partner gives feedback and asks a question, and an AI examiner asks another; after the partner's presentation, you give feedback and ask a question. Afterwards you get feedback in German on your own sentences and your recording – no marks, no pass prediction, no pronunciation rating. The simulation is paid and does not replace speaking with real people; prices and availability: b1sprechen.com/en/pricing.

Questions about Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3

01What do I have to do in Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3?

In Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 you give feedback on your partner's presentation and ask one question about it; after your own, you react to the feedback and answer questions from your partner and the second examiner (Modellsatz Erwachsene, 2nd ed. 2015, pp. 28 and 45).

02Does Teil 3 come after both presentations?

No. In the Goethe B1 speaking exam, Teil 3 follows straight after the first presentation; then the second candidate presents, and Teil 3 follows again with the roles swapped (moderation example, Modellsatz, p. 45).

03How long is Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3?

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 takes approx. 1–2 minutes per exam participant (Durchführungsbestimmungen, as of 1 September 2025, § 3); the candidates' cover sheet in the Modellsatz gives approx. 2 minutes, without saying whether that is per person (p. 25). Neither says how long feedback or answers should be; we suggest two or three sentences of feedback and two to four per answer.

04How many marks is Teil 3 worth?

Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 is worth up to 16 of 100 marks, all for task fulfilment (Erfüllung); pronunciation is marked once for Teil 1–3 together, and the pass mark is 60 (Übungssatz Erwachsene, © 2016, p. 48; Durchführungsbestimmungen § 6.3).

05Does the B1 Sprechen simulation give marks for Teil 3?

No. B1 Sprechen (b1sprechen.com), an independent practice tool with its own practice tasks, gives no marks, no pass prediction and no pronunciation rating. For Teil 3 you get feedback in German on the three points of the task sheet, with quotes from your own sentences, and your recording. Prices and availability: b1sprechen.com/en/pricing.

06How many questions do I ask in Teil 3?

In Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3, the candidate sheet asks for feedback plus one question about your partner's presentation (Modellsatz, p. 28). Make it one clear, open question (our advice).

07Are there topics (Themen) for Teil 3?

No. Goethe B1 Sprechen Teil 3 has no topics of its own: feedback and questions are about the Teil 2 presentation (Modellsatz, p. 28). To practise, use our practice topics under “More practice material” below.

08What happens in Teil 3 in an individual exam?

In an individual exam of the Goethe-Zertifikat B1, only the examiner asks questions about the presentation (Durchführungsbestimmungen, as of 1 September 2025, § 3.3). How many questions there will be is not stated.

09Is this the same as “Über ein Thema sprechen” in telc Deutsch B1?

No, only the name is shared. In telc Deutsch B1, “Über ein Thema sprechen” is Teil 2: you and your partner each get a different opinion on the same topic, report it to each other and discuss them, with no presentation (telc Deutsch B1, Übungstest 1, 13th ed. 2020).

10Are these real Goethe exam questions?

No. The dialogue, questions and phrases on this page are our own; official sample tasks are in the Modellsatz and Übungssatz linked below.
